Between 1802 and 1817, the British artist and naturalist James Sowerby published his monumental work British Mineralogy – five volumes with more than four hundred hand-colored copperplate engravings, depicting the rocks, minerals, and chemical compounds of Great Britain in rare detail.

Sowerby was renowned for his precise botanical illustrations, yet he also turned his gaze to the mineral world – with the same scientific accuracy and artistic elegance. His subjects ranged from ordinary table salt to the famous “Yorkshire Meteorite,” which fell from the sky in 1795 and sparked heated debates about the origins of the Earth. His aim was to make mineralogy accessible not only to scholars, but also to miners, farmers, and collectors.

More than two centuries later, Sowerby’s plates remain a milestone of scientific illustration – a fusion of beauty, curiosity, and the spirit of discovery.

The British Mineralogy Edition brings a selection of these historical drawings into the present day. Printed in Germany and hand-finished, the three notebooks in this set unite Sowerby’s fine lines and rich colors with the practical function of a pocket notebook. Just as his illustrations once invited close observation, these covers are meant to inspire you to record your own notes, observations, and discoveries – in whatever form they may take.
